South Hykeham Industrial Character Area is predominantly a light industrial and commercial area situated southwest of North Hykeham, adjacent to the A46 bypass. Newark Road is a major gateway leading into the south of Lincoln and carries a large volume of traffic throughout the day. The urban fringe has made it popular with industrial and commercial units due largely to its close proximity to the bypass and the availability of large plots which provide opportunities for both large premises and private parking.
The Character Area is bounded by the A46 to the west, Thorpe Lane to the north, residential developments to the east and Danker Wood to the south. Traces of the area’s historic past survive in the townscape, including the line of the Fosse Way Roman road and several 19th century agricultural field boundaries. However, light industrial and commercial development in the Modern Period [1967-2010] has overwritten much of the area’s former agricultural character, although a small area of fields and nursery plantation remains in the north.
