Hartsholme Estate

Overview

Hartsholme Estate Character Area (view detailed map) is a public housing development located in the south west of the city, approximately 3km from the city centre. In addition to residential properties, the area includes several services including two schools and sports facilities.

Residential housing and apartment blocks are constructed in a series of build units dating mainly to the Post-War Period, although several smaller areas of modern development exist. Buildings in the area were constructed on agricultural land lying between Hartsholme Park to the west and Boultham Hall Estate to the east. The orientation of several former field and estate boundaries are retained in the modern townscape.

Skellingthorpe Road runs east/west through the north of the Character Area and provides the only road access in and out of the Character Area. Buildings in the Character Area are arranged around a curvilinear network of circular avenues and drives, with short cul-de-sacs and closes located off them. Regular and well-connected roads divide the area up into small urban blocks, which are occasionally larger around services and recreation areas. Carriageways are a narrow two lanes in width, but are wider on roads connected with Skellingthorpe Road. Roads frequently have wide grass or gravel kerbs and 2m wide pavements.
